As presenters and facilitators, we spend a lot of our time at company and industry conferences. Most of these events are dire. The professional conference organiser is focused on ensuring the food is good, the logistics smooth and the venue well layed out. The organising team is focused on juggling the desires and requests of multiple stakeholders. In between all of this, the content is often badly structured, and the event does not achieve its desired results.
Many conferences are remembered more for what happens outside the conference room. And we’re not talking about the dreary “team building” activities that delegates are forced to engage in, or the allegedly fun and creative exercises that seem to have little relevance to the overall event. And let’s not even mention the “death by PowerPoint” sessions.
Conferences cost a lot of money. Not just the actual costs, but also the opportunity cost of having so many key people out of the office. It makes good sense then to develop a well thought through agenda, with appropriate content, delivery style, interaction, activities and theme that all relate directly to your business right now.
We believe that delegates should leave a conference inspired, challenged and better equipped to accomplish their role. We also believe that a conference works best when all the elements work towards the desired outcomes.
