Some thoughts on Talent
The term ‘Talent’ has become one of the Holy Grails that businesses are in search of today – and with good reason. Within most organisations these days, no matter the industry or country, within certain positions and generally from middle management upwards, there is a shortage of skilled people to fill the positions available.
If business is going to get it’s head around this challenge of scarce skills and the need for talented people, it needs to spend less time trying to define and identify ‘talent’ and more time creating environments that foster people to step up and out, to fill the gaps needed by the organisation. They need to let go of the idea that ‘talent’ is innate and realise that there are no short-cuts to be found through smarter assessments, evaluations and interviews (no matter how impressive the sales pitch of those who claim to have a solution). It is as it’s always been; the best people to be found in any environment are those who have had opportunity, time, encouragement, a bit of luck, invested much, risked lots, stayed focused on their goals, have passion, grew up or come from a supportive environment and work hard.
The challenge for companies going forward is to find more efficient and effective ways to encourage the innate motivation their people have to develop and grow. Companies are working within the shortest time frame they’ve ever had to. Today’s younger set are moving on faster and faster. From my own observations within one particular industry over the past two-years, it is clear that 20-year olds are changing departments, companies or industries approximately every 1.6-years. For 30-year olds, it’s every 2.5-years and for 40-year olds and over it’s every 6.4-years.
TomorrowToday’s focus is on helping our clients create environments that attract, retain and engage talented staff. We believe that there is a coming “talent tsunami”. When the economic upturn begins, companies will once again begin hiring and the talent deficit will be acute. Worse than that, we fear that many companies will find that their most talented employees take the opportunity to leave, especially if they have not been well treated during the downturn. Short term thinking now is going to cripple many companies in the near future. We can show you how to avoid this, and help you build your corporate muscle now.
