Mind the Gap: Understanding different generations

This award-winning presentation, repeatedly requested by CEOs and event planners around the world, is a multi-media, humour-filled exploration of the different generations: how value systems are developed and how these influence attitudes and behaviours. By understanding the impact of different generations, inside and outside your organisation, you can improve customer relationships, and the productivity and interactions of your teams. Understand why younger and older people – staff, customers, family and friends – have such different expectations and approaches to life, leadership, work and relationships. Apply the insights immediately and change your company forever.

The presentation or workshop helps participants understand why people older and younger than themselves have different value systems, and how a generation gap influences attitudes and behaviours. It concludes with practical applications suitable for the audience – this includes how to attract, retain and engage employees, how to connect with valued customers and service clients, across the generations.

Rethinking Strategy:  Back to the Future

Engaging in the what and how of ‘Strategic Planning’ has been part of every business school curriculum for the past several decades. Within this context we have all been taught Porter’s model of formulating strategy and it has been a served as a reliable guide as to how strategy ‘gets done’. As a result sophisticated methodologies around data capturing, analyzing that data, execution and implementation have all been centre stage to our understanding of ‘strategic planning’. The process has consumed vast amounts of time and budget. But, the reality is that little of what we say we need to do, gets done. (The statistics suggest that less than 10% of strategic plans get implemented). So why is this?

Planning for the future in a world that is constantly changing makes little sense. Rethinking Strategy: Back to the Future traces the roots behind ‘why we plan the way we do’ when it comes to strategy and then proposes another (smarter) way forward. The journey into the future is illuminated by an understanding of the past. Using Jomini’s (a Prussian general during the time of Napoleon) model of strategy we develop an understanding of the need for ‘strategic intuition’ – what this is and how to develop it. For many, the term ‘strategic intuition’ constitutes an oxymoron and as such makes little sense – especially in the light of what we have always been taught. However, using compelling case studies and a sound framework, strategic intuition is investigated in a manner that brings together the best of strategic theory and practice.  Given that everyone can – and should be – involved in thinking strategically, Rethinking Strategy: back to the Future becomes a relevant presentation for the entire organization but is highly suitable for strategic conferences and executive / leadership break-a-ways as well as the boardroom.

Beyond the Hype – How Web 2.0 is impacting today’s young people, and how they’re going to impact your business (new)

A new generation of young staff and clients have different expectations of work, management, how they will buy from you, and even how they communicate. The old idea of shouting your message – or he has the deepest pockets wins – has changed. What people want now is a way to engage with you. As customers they want websites that allow interaction – they want you to listen to them, not just shout messages at them. As staff, they use their computers (and mobile phones and Blackberries) not just for work, but as integral ways of managing their lives – and even as tools to help them take a break and refocus.

War of Two Wisdoms – Understanding the ‘talent crisis’ in a developing world context. (Updated)

Much is being written and talked about regarding a ‘war for talent’. It’s a very large challenge for business today. There is a crisis. In the developed world they’re facing a numbers problem. Not enough generation Xers to replace retiring baby-boomers (take a look at any developed world demographic). In the developing world (our context) we have a severe shortage of skills in many key areas. Particularly those areas that we rely on to create value in our organisations.

Step away from demographics and you’ve got the dynamic of a changing workplace and changing worker engaging each other.

And if that wasn’t enough we’re exiting a significant economic crisis that’s got us talking about a ‘new normal’ (whatever that is?).

This is the backdrop of TomorrowToday’s updated strategic presentation exploring the nature of this challenge – A War of Two Wisdoms. Baby-Boomer wisdom has very successfully lead us to this point.

Generation X wisdom will take us forward. The curious thing about wisdom is that it doesn’t mean ‘true’ or ‘right’. Prevailing wisdom is derived from the world view of those in charge. A changing world view (from Boomers to Xers) means a changing wisdom. Drawing from the latest research TomorrowToday is continually adding and updating our strategic view around this challenge.

A War of Two Wisdoms will assist you to better understand the nature of this challenge to enable you to find solutions and build strategies for the future.

Tuning the Organization: 9 Things That Need Balancing

Institutional change’ is identified as one of the five disruptive change drivers in TomorrowToday’s presentation After Shock. Organizations and leaders are finding that they have to adapt to the changing environment – both internally and externally – if they are to compete successfully in the new world of work. This adaptive work requires that both leaders and the organizations they lead have to from time to time, get off the ‘dance floor’ and onto ‘the balcony’ – if they are to gain the perspective necessary in order to think systemically and navigate the future.

Tuning the Organization: 9 Things That Need Balancing explores nine continuums that impact organizations everywhere and allows you to determine your own setting or position in the context of each continuum. What will emerge is a clear picture of your own organization’s profile as well as strategic insights as to how best to successfully navigate the new world of work and your own future. Tuning the Organization: 9 Things That Need Balancing provides not merely a clear contextual roadmap into the future but it offers a specific game-plan for your organization as to what to guard and keep; what needs to be changed; and a practical framework as to how best to achieve the desired results.

This presentation is designed to stimulate thought and discussion as well as provide strategic direction as to where it is you want to be and how to get there.

Tuning the Organization: 9 Things That Need Balancing is designed in such a way that it is suitable to be a keynote presentation at a conference as well as offers a stimulating framework for a strategic workshop or boardroom discussion.

The Enneagram: Nine Types of People

The Enneagram is an ancient personality profiling tool with nine different categories, numbered one to nine. Each “type” is governed by underlying needs and desires. Our process helps people to correctly identify their own “type” as well as to identify the types of others around them which in a business context would be colleagues or clients. Unlike other more modern (and scientific) tools, one does not need to take a formal test to identify the types – they become obvious in behaviour and attitudes. Having understood your own type, and the types of others around you, this offering then offers practical assistance for inter-personal relationships, team development, motivation and behaviour change. It also has excellent application in a sales environment from the perspective of understanding the triggers and motivators of one’s client enabling more successful negotiation processes.

Best delivered as half or full day programme, this intervention has profound and far-reaching outcomes as individuals start to recognise the triggers and behaviours in themselves and others. By understanding the motivation behind these, they are better able to engage with colleagues effectively while also being aware of their own reactions to situations.

The Future is Now: Taking advantage of the coming green revolution

Four steps every company can take now to reduce costs, increase sales and connect to a new generation of ethical consumers

Environmental sustainability, energy efficiency and diminishing resources present clear risks and significant opportunities for every company. But it requires companies to treat these issues as strategic imperatives, and not just “nice to have” PR opportunities. This is not just because of the moral or legal imperatives, but also because it makes business sense.

This presentation or workshop looks at:

  • WHAT must be done – we face many sustainability issues, but a clever place to start is energy efficiency. You can save money immediately, pre-empt upcoming legislation, and gain a wonderful reputation.
  • WHY we must do it – eight business reasons for responding to sustainability issues – not a drowning polar bear in sight (guaranteed!). There are some really important strategic issues that every business would do well to confront. We face both threats AND opportunities in the emerging green era.
  • HOW we can do it – A four step model to making the most of the green revolution.
  • WHO should do it – in workshop format, we suggest steps for energy managers and individuals who want to reduce energy usage in their teams or families.
  • WHEN it should be done – the session ends with an inspirational video clip that will get your team motivated for action.

This is not another “gloom and doom” session. It will help your team put business sustainability where it belongs: at the heart of your company’s strategy. This presentation or workshop helps to catalyse your entire organisation to implement “green”, socially responsible practices and systems. In addition to the moral and legal imperatives, this session highlights the business case, including reduced costs, increased profits, revenue opportunities and the growing demands of ethical consumers. This is not just a session for Greenpeace-type activists or do-gooders. This is something that will benefit every business everywhere.

Being Talented

The benefits of driving a focused team of talented staff are enormous. Your business will gain a competitive edge. But currently there is a mismatch of expectations between companies and the talent they employ. You’ll learn how to offer innovative thinking, push the boundaries and create an environment where each talented employee is personally challenged by their jobs.

Many companies put a lot of effort into “talent management”, bending over backwards to attract, retain, incentivise and reward their talented young staff. Yet, few companies are reaping the reward of these talented young people staying longer or working harder. One of the major reasons is that talented staff are not always helped to BE as talented as they can be. What most companies really want when they look for talented staff is “consistent, superior performance”. Yet, this is not what talented people want to contribute. They feel they can give a competitive edge, by offering innovative thinking, pushing the boundaries and being personally challenged by their jobs. This creates a mismatch of expectations between companies and the talent they employ.

This presentation or workshop is a humour-filled, multi-media driven, inspirational presentation. In addition to explaining the paradox of the 21st century workplace, we outline four secrets that every talented person should know in order to enjoy their job and contribute to the success of the company. We’ll show you how to turn today’s negative environment into a positive one.

The current economic downturn provides an ideal opportunity for staff and companies to realign their expectations and forge a new partnership for success. Talented people are less likely to be mobile. Companies need their current teams to achieve more, with less resources. Now, more than ever, people matter. This presentation provides the framework you need to handle important conversations at work. We’ll show you how to renew your focus on talented individuals and forge a path of success for youGAme company.
